Nineteen photos
from a practice rescue mission with the Coast Guard helicotper, TF-LIF working with the new cutter Ţór. I was able to photograph transfer between the helicopter and ship after I was myself transferred to the ship. Then observing from a small boat, a
simulated rescue from both a dinghy and from the sea itself. After this I was transferred back to the helicopter via the winch, and then was also able to photograph a mountain search from a small mountain top near Reykjavík. At the end of the mission I was then rescued from the mountain..

Return to Index St. Albans May 7, 2012
Eleven photos
from the an exercise with the Royal Nave Frigate, HMS ST Albans, its Merlin EH-101 helicopter and the new Icelandic Goast Guard vessel, Ţór just outside the fjord Hvalfjörđur. 70 years ago the convoys supplying Russia with material started from there. During this short voyage, the sailors and men who lost their lifes during this important phase of World War II were remembered with a memorial service aboard the HMS ST Albans and a wreath was cast adrift in the fjord as a symbol of their sacrifice.

Return to Index Reykjavík. A few photos of the arrival of the brand new Coast Guard plane, TF-SIF. It is a Bombardier Dash 8-300 and has the latest detection and communication equipment fitted. It replaces the old Fokker F-27 Friendship, TF-SYN, that served all its time in the Coast Guard service and has now been retired. Lets hope that this SIF is as versatile and successful as its predecessor. It is also the fourth plane in the Coast Guard service to carry the name of the Norse Goddess SIF who of course os the wife of the Norse God Thor. The earlier three aircraft were:
1. C-54B Skymaster
2. Aerospatiale SA-365 Dauphin
3. Aerospatiale SA-365N Dauphin
.

Taking off is Fokker F-27, TF-SYN of the Icelandic Coast Guard. The weather was rather indifferent during the day, and the light was definately not good, most of the photos being taken against the light to the south and the rain also came from the south.  The pilot is showing a quick reaction retraction of the landing gear, which usually has not started to retract this soon after take-off.

This photograph is taken from a mountaintop south of Reykjavík on September 30, 1998. The Coast Guard pilots are performing a routine rough terrain rescue practice and this photographer had the good fortune to be dropped on the mountain top first. Here a shallow approach is practised.

I once decided that the only photos I would have on this website were of aircraft in action. This photo however is very special showing the Coast Guard fleet when it was largest, on October 13, 1980.
