Some comments by Win Goodwin on the fate of 135563.
I was the SDO the day that aircraft had an unfortunate landing on a taxiway instead of the runway. The aircraft was on a GCA and when he broke out the taxiway looked like the runway to the pilot. Unfortunately, the taxiway wasn't long enough. I became aware of the incident when a crewman from another squadron ran into my office and asked if he could have the radio from "that broken airplane" Regarding dates: VP11 was in Keflavik from 25 January 1960 to 17 February 1960. 5563 crashed sometime during that period. I imagine it was transferred to FASRON 107 when the squadron left Iceland.(17 Feb) The date in the records must have resulted when FASRON was writing it off. As far as the picture taken in Argentia in Feb 1959 goes, I would doubt it. Since I think all of our planes were in Iceland in February and 5563 never made it back. ( I base this on my own log book and I think we were all there by then) I can't be sure but the photo looks like it was taken at Kevlavik. It might have been taken in January in Argentia but most of us only spent the night there. Coming home, I flew direct with no stop in Argentia.

Based on this I would conclude that 135563was photographed in Argentia on January 25, 1960 on the way to Iceland.

The last two of the BuNo are not quite visible, but after a long and careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that they are 60, which fits with the fact that the only VP-11 plane that I know to have carried LE-7, in the possible number range is 148360. If anyone knows better, please contact me.
