This course explores the history of western art and music from antiquity to modern times. The emphasis will be placed on studying paintings, architecture, sculpture and most popular forms of music. The most important art movements, artworks, artists, composers and musicians of each era will be carefully studied and examined. The course also focuses on the interplay between art, music and history and how these fields are influence by the arts. Students will also be taught how to analyse art and music and will be encouraged to form their own opinions about the subject. The coursework mostly consists of independent student produced work, group discussions, and short lectures by the teachers.

This course covers World history from the early beginning until late 18th century. The early beginning; the Agricultural revolution and early civilization in the Fertile Triangle (Egypt and Mesopotamia); ancient history of the Middle East; Greece, its culture and history; Rome; its early history and expansion, the Roman empire and Roman culture; the history of Europe in the Middle ages; the Great Discoveries in 15th and 16the century and the colonization of Latin America, Africa and Asia; the Renaissance and Reformation in Europe; the Age of religious wars in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Age of L’ancien Regime in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries and The Age of Enlightenment; the American Revolution in the 18th century.

In the course, students will learn about the development of Western art from ancient times to the present day. At the end of it, they should know the main art trends, their characteristics and the soil from which they arose. Finally, students should be able to describe the main foreign and national artists.

Topics covered in the course: European art ie. architecture, sculpture and painting and the main art trends, e.g. classical art, medieval art (Romanesque and Gothic styles), renaissance art, baroque and rococo, neoclassicism, romanticism and realism. Also impressionism and expressionism in the last century and before the turn of the century and the main art trends of the 20th century.

This course covers world history from 1789 to 1947. The French revolution and the political development in Europe in the 19th century; the Industrial revolution and the formation of bourgeois regime; the Age of imperialism in Africa, Asia and Latin America; the Belle eqoque and history of early 20th century; the Great War and its aftermath; the Roaring twenties in USA and the Great Depression; the rise of facism in Europe and The Second World War

This course covers world history from the Cold War 1947 to 2000; The Cold war, the black civil rights movement, Womens liberation movement and the hippie culture; the Middle East in the 20th century and the rise of Islam; the Independence of former European colonies and History of cinema and film making.
